What is Giclée?
Giclée (pronounced zhee-clay) is a method of printing that creates high quality prints. In French, “la giclée” means, “that which is sprayed or squirted.” This style of printing started in the 1980s, when high-resolution digital scans were used in conjunction with archival quality inks.
Printmaker Jack Duganne coined the term in 1991. Today, Giclée describes fine art printing that uses pigment-based, archival quality inks, created by advanced inkjet printers.
What’s the main difference between Giclée and other print technologies?
Many traditional print technologies use a combination of only 4 colors, while Giclée printers use up to 12 individual colors.
This gives much smoother gradient transitions and a wider range of color, so you can expect more richness and depth in the final product.
Since the end result is almost indistinguishable from the original, Giclée prints are a great option for art lovers on a budget.
How long will Giclée prints last?
With proper care and storage, a giclee print can last over 100 years without fading! Frame and display your Giclée print in a location protected from direct sunlight, and it will look as stunning as the day you acquired it.
